"Rachel". I knew I was in for a ride and that she was a special person based on our strange but seemingly destined interactions. The first time she was in the company cafeteria my eyes immediately picked her out from among the crowd. As she bused her tray, my eyes followed her for a good ten seconds while she returned the gaze. The first time I talked to her we discussed the prostitution industry in China. Her innocent looks and youthful nature belie a very sophisticated and sharp mind honed by many experiences. Since that initial conversation, we've had multiple discussions and the topics we touched on include politics, music, movies, religion, career aspirations, family, personality, marijuana/drugs, tattoos, mutual friends, childhood influences, haute couture, anorexia, food, countless things and places she has done and been that I haven't, Nobel Prize winners, US Dept of Labor, places we want to go, books, homosexuality, among others. She can converse about the lowbrow (celebrities) or the significant (cancer research.) We are so different and yet get along so well. I'm a conservative Republican while she's a staunch Democrat. I can't dream of getting into a top-tier law school much less HLS. I'm a slacker while she seemingly can accomplish anything she attempts and does. I'm introspective, she's loquacious. I have no piercings or other markings on my body; she has a phoenix etched onto her back. I act hard while I'm really soft. She acts ditzy and helpless while underneath she is tough as nails. I walk away from potential scuffles, but she will not hesitate to clock guys who act inappropriately. I have never had any romantic affiliations; she has never been without a boyfriend since grade school. I really enjoy hanging out with her.
